Musei ad Helsinki? Questi sono quelli che non potete perdere!
Museums in Helsinki? Those are the ones you can’t miss!
ENG: Helsinki is one of the most interesting cities for art, exhibitions, architecture and design.
We’ve spent one day visiting some Museums, which turned out to be a pleasant discovery, perfect to explore a very important part of the city. Using the Helsinki Card you can access these museums both free or with a preferential price, so don’t forget it! Monday is usually closing time, the general schedule is 10.00 – 20.00. remember that a few places stop sell tickets half an hour before closing time.
Natural History Museum
Closed to the public for several years for renovation, it has been reopened in a totally new vest. Inside you can find botany, zoology, geology and paleontology sections, even used for research purpose by the Helsinki University. The big moose in front of the Museum is his most known symbol. It’s free on Thursday from 16 to 18. For a complete overview you also can visit the botanical garden of Kaisaniem, in Unioninkatu 44.
The beautiful staircase allow you to make great pictures.
Kiasma – Modern Art Museum
The youngest among Helsinki’s museums, only hosting modern art exhibitions, with a 6 months rotation between one and the next. Maybe for his central position and for such a modern building, Kiasma is one of the most known of the finnish capital. Open to the public in 1998, the choice to realize such a modern building in front of the equestrian statue of Mannerheim marshal was immediately criticized from part of the people (project by the american architect Steven Holl).
You can’t miss it because of the awesomeness of his minimal spaces, making it look a surreal place.
Ateneum, Galleria Nazionale
Ateneum, National Gallery
Here you can find the biggest collection of classic finnish paintings. Ateneum has been opened in 1887 and realized by the architect Theodor Höijer. Together with finnish painters such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Helene Schjerfbeck, Albert Edelfelt,Hugo Simberg, artists of finnish impressionism, we can find works by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger, Edvard Munch e Marc Chagall. Their paintings cover the period from 1750 to 1960. At the end of 2009 the museum hosted a popular exhibition dedicated to Picasso, with paintings coming from Paris. Because of the inflow of people the museum has been, sometimes, opened during the night.
Helsinki University Library
The new central library of the Helsinki University, opened in september 2012, is the biggest scientific librarian pole of Finland and it’s located in Hirvi’s area, historical district in the heart of the city. That’s a vanguard library both from the architecture and tecnological side, although it is not a museum it’s still surprising from the aesthetic point of view, worth a visit.
